We shake the world with our groundbreaking creativity, both for our customers and for our own studio. We have set clear goals and do not shy away from challenges. That's why we also take a closer look at our own studio, because it's not all about chatting, there's real work to be done. The evidence below speaks for itself.

Save the seas to save the earth!

We are a graphic design agency just a short walk from the beach. As surfers we are passionate about the sea and a healthy environment. About 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by water, so we are confident that a solution to climate change can be found there. Save the seas to save the earth!

We have offset the CO2 emissions of the past 20 years by supporting SeaTrees with the planting of mangrove forests. SeaTrees is a program of Sustainable Surf. They plant, restore and protect coastal ecosystems around the world to combat climate change.

Fossil no Deal

In 2023 we signed the 'Responsible Seduction Treaty' of Fossil No Deal. The initiative calls on communications professionals not to work for the fossil industry. About 80 signatories have already committed to the mission. We are proud to be in the list of supporters such as Blyde, Buutvrij, GRRR and Heldergroen.

Repeat headphones

After reading Babette Porcelijn's book 'The Hidden Impact' it was crystal clear; most of our footprint is in stuff. Difficult, because we cannot work without our laptops, screens and telephones. We can ensure that these items are produced in the most sustainable way possible.

For example, we chose headphones from the Rotterdam brand Repeat. Think of them as the Fairphone among headphones. They come as construction kits that you can completely take apart. If something is broken, you can easily replace it. You also get a lifetime warranty!

Creatives for Climate

In 2023 we became a member of Creatives for Climate, a community platform of more than 4,000 creative companies from more than 50 countries committed to climate solutions.

THE NUMBERS

behind the numbers

Electricity

6,210
kWh

We heat our studio with a heat pump and cook electrically. As a result, our electricity use is higher than average, but we use 0% gas. Our electricity is 100% sustainable electricity. We have reduced our consumption by 9.7% compared to 2019 and by 5.7% compared to 2021.

After an intensive surf session, we like to get rid of the salt before we get back to work. That's why you can shower at our studio. This year we used slightly less water than last year.

Cycling

In 2023 we will have cycled 7,425 km.

Train

896km

Too far to cycle? Then we take the train. In total, we traveled 826% more kilometers by train in 2023 than in 2022. This sounds absurd, but this is because we went to Berlin with our team for an international design festival.

Sometimes there is no other option... then you would like to organize a strategy session in an impressive place in nature with the most beautiful waves. In 2023 we drove 4 km less than in 2022.

What's cooking?

A healthy lunch is prepared every day in our kitchen. Often with fresh organic products, always without meat. The pasta with lemon and red pepper was a favorite in 2023. Would you like to come by and have lunch sometime?

IMPACT
highlights

With inspiring keynote speakers such as Paul Polman and Ruud Veltenaar, it could only be a great day. That's what it became. This year's theme was 'net positive impact'. We will not save the world by compensating or polluting less. If we really want to make an impact, we must 'give back' more than we 'take'.

TRAINING

& development

2.5 x animation experts

A picture paints a thousand words. But what about moving images. We are convinced that we can tell our story even better with moving images. That is why both Tom and Bas followed animation training. Tom followed animation training at the Motion Design Academy of Reducations. Bas followed an After Effects training for advanced students at the Competence Factory.

Brittany Board Meeting

Every year Hederik and Bas go to a board meeting. The ideal balance between work, nature, adventure and surfing. This year our trip went to the Breton coast. During this unforgettable trip we not only enjoyed the waves, but we also refined our plans for the future. Here are some unforgettable moments and insights from our trip:

During our sessions we focused on strategies that impact how people think and act. With our work we want to change the behavior of our target group so that they can contribute to a better world.

Creative playground for a positive future. We believe that you get people moving by showing them that their behavior can contribute to a healthy and fair future. Trying to depress your target group moving forward? That does not work! That is why our visual concepts are based on a positive worldview.

The women and men of our neighboring company DPI have raised money for the ALS Foundation. They organized a sponsored race where they paddle boarded from the Scheveningen harbor to the Glass House in Nijmegen. Fantastic! Of course we also wanted to contribute financially.

DPI is committed to the ALS Netherlands Foundation

An estimated 100 million people are on the run worldwide. Some end up in our country. Stichting Vluchtelingenwerk takes care of these people. We have supported the foundation with a one-off financial contribution.

The sea is a place that should be accessible to everyone. The volunteers of the Royal Rescue Society ensure that it is a safe place. Just like last year, we support the KNRM with an annual contribution.

If you want to know more about the heroic deeds of the KNRM, listen to the podcast Rescuers at Sea .

Studio Duel has been around for two decades🚀. We couldn't think of a better place to celebrate than Berlin. What have we done? Boosted our creativity at the Forward Festival. Explored the amazing city by bike. Overwhelmed by the galleries and museums. We enjoyed the vibrant nightlife. And... Hederik discovered that the bathroom floor is really slippery.

At the Forward Festival, Baugasm taught us how to push the boundaries of our creativity with its poster-a-day project. Liza from Studio Dumbar blew us away with her visual overdose. Her integrity and urge to experiment give her rockstar status. With her 3D interactive makeup, Ines Alpha gave us a completely different perspective on what beauty is. It was a rollercoaster of emotions during Snasks' talk. We laughed and cried, foolishness combined with immense wisdom. What an inspiring mind fuck.

Nothing but love for the Forward Festival, but what we did notice is that the themes of sustainability and inclusion were sorely absent. High time for change.

20 YEARS OF DUEL
A deep dive into the archive

Duel bestaat 20 jaar
Duel bestaat 20 jaar

20 years ago we started our studio in an anti-squat building on Van Alkemadelaan. The building has now had to make way for the International Criminal Court. The location of our studio is certainly not the only thing that has changed over the past twenty years.

To show what has been on our minds, we have delved deep into our archives. We shared many of the beautiful things we found there via social media and our website. Some projects are now antique, but still relevant. We received a lot of great responses from clients and former employees. We look forward with great pleasure to what the next 20 years will bring us.
